About Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft's Copilot for work is an add-on licence that puts AI inside the Microsoft 365 apps an organisation already pays for, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, and grounds work answers in what each user's account can already access. Microsoft's licensing documentation (updated 30 September 2026) sets out the structure. Copilot is bought as an add-on to an eligible plan: Microsoft Copilot Business goes with Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard and Premium, Microsoft 365 Apps for Business and Teams Essentials, while the enterprise Copilot licence can be added to a long list that includes Microsoft 365 E3 and E5, Office 365 E1, E3 and E5, the frontline F1 and F3 plans, and standalone Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, Planner, Project and Visio plans; Microsoft 365 E7 includes Copilot. Education and US government versions exist. Separately, Copilot Chat with web-grounded answers is included at no extra cost with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription, while work-grounded chat needs the Copilot licence. The same page notes that the Microsoft 365 Copilot app is now called Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft's pricing pages did not load for us on 16 October 2026, so the $30-a-user figure this directory used to show has been removed; get the current price for your plan and country from Microsoft or your reseller. The limits: Copilot can surface anything a user can technically open, so loose sharing permissions become visible; its value depends on how much work really happens in Microsoft 365; and the free web-grounded chat may already cover casual use. Glean on this site is the cross-application search alternative, and Notion AI the equivalent for Notion-first teams. Verdict: the default choice for organisations standardised on Microsoft 365 — tidy permissions, pilot with a small group, and compare against free Copilot Chat before licensing everyone.

Best For

Organisations whose documents, mail and meetings already run on Microsoft 365 and whose sharing permissions are under control. Not for teams working mainly in Google Workspace or Notion, or for anyone whose needs are met by the free web-grounded Copilot Chat.

How Microsoft 365 Copilot compares in Productivity

The 13 productivity agents we track, listed alphabetically. 9 of the 13 publish a free tier. Prices are the vendor’s own published starting figure and change without notice — check the vendor’s pricing page before committing.

The bar under a price compares that plan with the dearest monthly plan in this table (6 of the 13 rows are flat monthly prices). Custom, per-seat, per-usage and annual prices are not on the same scale, so they carry no bar — a missing bar does not mean cheaper.
