About GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot is the AI coding assistant that lives inside the editor you already use — VS Code, JetBrains and other IDEs, plus the GitHub CLI — completing lines as you type, answering questions in chat and, in agent mode, working through a multi-step task in your repository. What separates it from a terminal agent such as Claude Code is where it sits: it is an assistant in the loop with you, not a worker you hand a ticket to. GitHub's plans page (read 16 October 2026) lists a Free plan at $0 limited to 2,000 inline completions and 50 chat requests a month, Pro at $10 a month, Pro+ at $39 and Max at $100, with Business and Enterprise priced through sales; the Free plan supports the CLI and agent mode. The honest limits: the free quota runs out fast on a working day, chat and agent usage is capped on Free, and suggestion quality depends heavily on how much of the relevant code is open or indexed. Verdict: if your team is on GitHub, Copilot is the lowest-friction way to put completion and chat in every developer's editor; if you want autonomous end-to-end tasks, compare it with Claude Code and Devin on this site.

Best For

Teams already on GitHub who want completion and chat in every developer's editor at a flat per-seat price. Not for developers who want an autonomous agent to take a whole ticket end to end, or for anyone who must keep code off third-party servers.

How GitHub Copilot compares in Coding

The 8 coding agents we track, listed alphabetically. 4 of the 8 publish a free tier. Prices are the vendor’s own published starting figure and change without notice — check the vendor’s pricing page before committing.

The bar under a price compares that plan with the dearest monthly plan in this table (3 of the 8 rows are flat monthly prices). Custom, per-seat, per-usage and annual prices are not on the same scale, so they carry no bar — a missing bar does not mean cheaper.
