Devin, from Cognition, is built as an autonomous AI software engineer. Rather than suggesting code while you type, you hand it a task and it plans the work, writes the code, tests and debugs it, writes documentation and can deploy — then reports back. Our coding-agents comparison calls it the most ambitious product in the category: give it a task such as building a web scraper and come back later to find it done.

That autonomy is both the strength and the risk. Devin is best at genuinely autonomous, isolated and well-defined tasks where you want minimal involvement. It is weakest where work needs tight collaboration or real-time feedback, and its planning can go wrong in ways that are hard to catch mid-task. Our verdict in that comparison: promising, best for isolated tasks, and not ready to replace a developer.

Pricing as listed here is a subscription starting at $500 a month, which puts it in a different bracket from editor tools; check Cognition's own pricing page for current plans. Cognition also owns Windsurf, the former Codeium editor now rebranded Devin Desktop, which keeps a free tier.

How to judge it: run it on your own repository with tasks you already understand — a mechanical refactor across several files, a bug you have already fixed, tests for existing behaviour — and ask whether you would actually merge the diff.
