About Operator (OpenAI)
Operator no longer exists as a separate product, and that is the first thing anyone searching for it should know. OpenAI introduced it on 23 January 2025 as a research preview for Pro users in the US: an agent with its own browser, powered by a model OpenAI called Computer-Using Agent, that looks at a page through screenshots and types, clicks and scrolls to finish a task such as filling in a form or ordering groceries. An update dated 17 July 2025 on the same announcement page says Operator is now fully integrated into ChatGPT as ChatGPT agent, reached by choosing agent mode in the composer, and that the standalone operator.chatgpt.com site would be sunset; the page now points readers to OpenAI's workspace agents and ChatGPT Work instead. The design choices described at launch are still the useful part: the agent hands control back when it gets stuck, it is trained to ask you to take over for logins, payment details and CAPTCHAs, and you can take over the remote browser at any moment. The limits follow from that. It is slower than doing a familiar task yourself, it needs supervision at exactly the steps where a mistake costs money, and which ChatGPT plans include agent mode, with what usage, is set on OpenAI's own pricing page, which did not render for us on 16 October 2026 — so this page lists no price. Claude for Chrome on this site works inside your own browser rather than a remote one; Browse AI and Axiom AI are better for repeatable scraping and form-filling you want on a schedule. Verdict: treat this page as a pointer. Try ChatGPT's agent mode on your own one-off tasks, and use a dedicated automation tool when the job repeats.
Best For
ChatGPT subscribers with occasional one-off web chores — bookings, forms, shopping baskets — who will watch the critical steps. Not for repeated, scheduled or high-volume browser work, where a recorder or scraper with published pricing is cheaper and more predictable.
